Two-thirds of UK workers want a better work-life balance

Do you view work-life balance as a myth or is it something you are constantly striving to achieve? A Gallup study shows that 61% of American workers are seeking a better work-life balance, a desire sparked by the increase in flexible working caused by the pandemic.

The situation is broadly the same in the UK. Recent research from human resources and payroll software company Ciphr found that more than two-thirds of people – specifically, 70% of women and 65% of men – consider work-life balance to be more important than work. salary.

The discovery of flexibility in how and where to work during the coronavirus crisis made it possible to realize that careers could, and perhaps should, adapt to our lives instead of the opposite approach that had become the standard.

However, while the majority of us desire greater balance, only a minority know how to achieve it; At least that’s what a Harvard Business School study of mid- and upper-level workers suggests.

He found that when trying to achieve work-life balance, those who believe they have it see it as a cyclical thing rather than a hard and fast rule of life. They understand that reactivity is necessary and that difficult decisions have to be made. The study showed that a work-life balance stems from the understanding that sacrifices will have to be made at work and at home, that decisions must be final, and that support is needed from all sources.

Define success for yourself

What does a successful work balance look like to you? It will certainly be different from the person sitting next to you. It will be a mix of personal and professional goals and will be heavily influenced by the controllable and non-negotiable elements of your life. Once you have defined your gain, you can begin to make precise decisions about what you sacrifice to achieve it.

Manage Technology

How can technology help you succeed? According to the Office of National Statistics (ONS), hybrid working is now the norm for 84% of corporate employees, so what can you do with that freed up commuting time?

Can technology – everything from email to SLACK and WhatsApp to Zoom – make your workday smoother? On the other hand, it’s important to recognize aspects of technology that it might be time to cut yourself off from; threads you don’t need to be in or remote meetings you might not need to attend. Technology should save time, not make it easier to waste.

Create support networks at work and at home

Delegation at work and at home is imperative if you want to achieve goals without working around the clock. At home, outsource time-consuming tasks. At work, look to the future and start empowering those around you to make decisions without you. Retaining key talent is essential for successful teams, and 70% of workers will stay with a company if promoted within three years.
