Punjab Cabinet Committee Formed to Fast Track Employment Regularization Bill

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Thursday announced the formation of a three-member cabinet committee comprising Finance Minister Harpal Cheema, Education Minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer and Minister of Prisons and of Harjot Singh Bains Mines, to remove all legal barriers to the passage of a new bill to regularize the services of eligible contract employees.

Announcing this on the Vidhan Sabha Procuratorate, the CM said the state government is fully responsive to the need to regularize the services of employees working on contract, ad hoc, daily wage, workload and temporary basis. However, he said, a law drafted for this purpose in 2016 is pending and another drafted in 2021 is still awaiting the approval of the governor of Punjab.

The CM said that the government has put the wheels in motion for which the cabinet, in its meeting held during the day, gave its endorsement to a draft new bill in this regard. He said the cabinet committee will examine the legal feasibility of this project in consultation with the general counsel, and that a new foolproof bill will be drafted to provide relief to these employees.

The CM further said that the state government would not hesitate to convene a special session of the state assembly to introduce the new bill as it was the top priority.

    Harsha murder case: NIA searches more than a dozen locations in Karnataka

    The National Investigation Agency on Thursday carried out searches at more than a dozen locations in Karnataka in connection with the murder of Bajrang activist Dal Harsha, an official said.
