How AIG Builds a Culture of Belonging in the Workplace

Ellen Robles explains how Employee Resource Groups foster an inclusive environment and help build careers at AIG.

For AIG’s Ellen Robles, her role as Senior Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) is more than a job – it’s a passion she discovered in her early 16s. years at AIG and his 6-year-old son now inspires.

Born with autism, Ellen’s son faces many challenges including difficulties with communication and support for daily needs. But where some see limitations, Ellen sees potential in her son’s neurodiversity — specifically, his enormous attention to detail and uncanny memory. Ellen recognizes that neurodiverse individuals can bring distinct skills and perspectives to organizations like AIG.

“My son constantly reminds me why I do the work I do,” Ellen says. “If I have a tough day, I carry on, knowing I’m an advocate for people like him. That’s a big part of DEI – being an ally, in good times and in bad times.

Ellen uses her passion to create a culture of belonging at AIG. One of the main ways she does this is through working with Employee Resource Groups (ERGs), where colleagues from diverse backgrounds can connect with senior leaders and develop relationships to support long-term careers at AIG.

The ERGs are a concrete example of AIG’s commitment to providing an inclusive environment for colleagues from all dimensions of diversity. These networks provide an atmosphere of understanding, where colleagues from all levels and fields of activity can have stimulating conversations and pursue common interests.

“When people don’t have to hide who they are, they perform better,” Ellen notes. “Letting go of this emotional and mental baggage allows colleagues to focus on their work.”

The ERGs focus on several key areas, including alliance and education. They also provide mentoring opportunities and allow colleagues to expand their network in different business areas.

This exposure can be a game-changer: through ERGs, colleagues can demonstrate their abilities and expand their skills, guided by leaders and mentors, which can lead to career growth at AIG.

“Many colleagues have built their careers at AIG, in part through their involvement in ERGs,” says Ellen. “They appreciate that inclusion is a top-to-bottom AIG priority and benefit from the career advice and networking opportunities.”

Clara Elliott, Senior Risk Management Specialist in AIG’s Private Client Group, confirms:

As a transgender woman, she interacts with people facing similar challenges through New York LGBTQ+ & Allies ERG – sharing advice, support and empathy. She also sees the benefits to her career from her alliance with high-level colleagues at AIG, who provide advice and expand her network.

“It lets you know there are others like you – that you can be yourself and don’t have to worry.” notes Clara. “You know the company has your back.”

Clara’s active leadership role in her ERG gives her the opportunity to advocate for the LGBTQ+ community on a large scale – speaking to major groups around the world about her journey as a transgender woman, both personally and professionally.

“Being in an ERG has given my career at AIG greater meaning,” Clara says. “It allowed me to share my story and connect with a network of colleagues I wouldn’t have encountered otherwise.”

In recent years, these networks have also played a key role in keeping AIG colleagues connected and supporting wellbeing during the global pandemic. Virtual social events – such as cooking and fitness classes – have not only helped colleagues feel less isolated, but have also created a forum to discuss new challenges, such as homeschooling and working remotely. distance. In addition, ERGs offer new hires the opportunity to get to know their colleagues and learn more about the organization.

“In the years to come, continuing to develop a culture of belonging in the workplace remains a priority,” adds Ellen. “We still have work to do; however, we are making steady progress.
