Auditing is the most in-demand financial career in the UK right now

A new study from CMC Markets, an online trading platform, analyzed monthly Google searches using Ahrefs for jobs in the financial sector to determine which career is most in demand. They also extracted the number of UK-based adverts for each financial role on the Indeed job board during the month of December 2022.

Research ‘Listener‘ ranked number one on the list with 222,500 monthly Google searches. People search on average 5,000 times per month for “auditing jobs” and 500 times for “auditing careers”. There are currently 785 financial auditor jobs on Indeed.

Actuarial careers are close behind as the second most searched job in finance with a total of 166,600 searches per month for “actuary careers” and “actuary jobs”. A actuary was the only career in the insurance industry to make the top ten. There are currently 1,030 finance actuary jobs on Indeed.

The third most desirable finance career is corporate banking which amassed a total of 96,280 Google searches per month, including 1,200 for the search term “corporate banking jobs”. There are currently 3,748 banking jobs on Indeed.

Another banking career took fourth place with bank teller Totaling 43,250 Google searches each month, 12,000 of those monthly searches were for “bank teller jobs.” Currently, there are only 35 bank teller jobs on Indeed.

In fifth place came forensic accounting with 39,650 Google searches per month and the sixth most in-demand career in finance was a compliance officer with 35,170 monthly searches on Google.

Despite being one of the ten most sought-after jobs in finance, forensic accounting only gives 64 job vacancies in the UK, according to Indeed. On the other hand, there are currently 6,685 UK compliance officer openings on Indeed.

With 29,080 Google searches per month, a Customer advisor was the seventh most sought-after career in finance and there are 811 job postings for client advisor positions on Indeed.

Loan officers And branch managers ranked eighth and ninth on the list with 22,950 and 18,560 monthly Google searches, respectively. There are 1,744 jobs on Indeed for loan officers and branch managers in the UK. Research has found that the tenth most in-demand job in finance is a risk manager with 17,430 monthly searches on Google. There are currently 5,259 job vacancies on Indeed for risk management positions in the UK. Michael Hewson, Chief Market Analyst at CMC Markets, commented on the results: “Despite the scarcity of jobs in some industries, it appears that there is significant interest in different sectors of the finance world.

“Interestingly, a lot of that number is banking-related searches. And overall, finance careers are searched 2,935,840 times a month on Google.

“This number is definitely something to watch as we head into the new year as people may be looking for new opportunities in 2023.”
